Can I safely repair a broken light switch myself at home?

You can replace a broken light switch yourself if you shut off the correct breaker and the wiring and box are undamaged. If the switch is warm, charred, buzzing, part of a 3‑way/4‑way setup, or tied to aluminum wiring, call a pro. Use a like‑for‑like switch rated for the circuit. Tri-State Water, Power and Air performs outlet, switch, and GFCI repairs in Nixa and Joplin.

  • Turn off the breaker and verify power is off.
  • Label wires and move them to the new like‑for‑like switch.
